Regarding Wave

New York, NY: New Directions, 1967. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. Signed by Gary Snyder. From the Collection of Ken Mikolowski, Co-Founder of Detroit's Visionary Alternative Press. "'Wild nature as the ultimate ground of human afffairs'--the beautiful, precarious balance among forces and species forms a unifying theme for the new poems in this collection. The title, 'Regarding Wave,' reflects 'a half-buried series of word origins dating back through the Indo-European language: intersections of energy, woman, song and 'Gone Beyond Wisdom.' Central to the work is a cycle of songs for Snyder's wife, Masa, and their first son, Kai." (from back cover). "Regarding Wave" is an intriguing book, even for Snyder afficionados. It combines the grounded perception of Snyder's earliest work like "Riprap & Cold Mountain Poems" with the integration of intellectual abstraction of the books that followed it, including 1960s "Myths & Texts." It is a benchmark for him, as it marks 15 years since the famous Six Gallery Reading at just over 10 years as a poet with books under his own name. By 1970 Snyder had become a bona-fide Beat-&-Beyond representative, and along with Michael McClure, it is acknowledged that Snyder emblemized the thread of ecological awareness and Zen intellectuality that is so profoundly part of the Beat tradition as now understood. From the collection of Ken & Ann Mikolowski, founders of Detroit's visionary "Alternative Press" and close friends/publishers of Snyder. Signature in black felt pen ink reads: "Gary Snyder." Book in fine condition with rubbing to front, back covers; slight shelf-wear throughout; minor yellowing to back cover. Fine. [Item #2973]
