Paris, France: Editions Pierre Belfond, 1969. First Printing. Softcover. An early compendium all about the legendary Living theatre, the avant-garde artistic, cultural & political phenomenon during the 1960s led by Julian Beck & his wife, Judith Malina. Over half the text consists of a lengthy, deep interview with Beck & Malina conducted by Jean-Jacques Lebel, the French poet-publisher-activist-scholar-translator who was & remains an important figure in the Beat-&-Beyond scene. Also essays, articles & poems by these three & others; & two extensive sections of photographs (including a wonderfully casual image of Beck with Allen Ginsberg). This is the French first edition published by the same imprint that issued the first edition of William S. Burroughs' interview with Daniel Odier (titled "The Job" in later editions), in the same format as this item, during the same year (1969). Softcover original, first edition, first printing, with references to "Acheve d'imprimer le 18 Juillet 1969..." & "Depot legal: 3e trimestre 1969" in colophon at rear endpaper. All text in French. An important rarity for the French-fluent scholar-collector. In near-fine condition with moderate rubbing, scratching, soiling & browning to front, back covers & spine; minor wear, creasing & tiny bumps at & near edges & corners of same; one visible crease across length of spine; moderate wear, browning, scratching & soiling to edges of text block, esp. lower edge. Interior fine with only very light browning to page leaves mostly at blank margins; tiny bumps & shallow gauges at corners & edges of some page leaves. Near Fine. [Item #2995]
