This number of the venerable American art journal features an article by David Joselit entitled "Burroughs Virology," concerning the exhibit of William S. Burroughs' artworks, scrapbooks, etc. occurring at that time (1996) at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art: "Ports of Entry: William S. Burroughs and the Arts." An annotated, most erudite art-historical essay, that bestows the respect for & context of WSB's art that it deserves. Interspersed throughout are eight images of WSB's artworks & scrapbook-collage pages, many in crisp color. "...Burroughs pushes the cancerous commutability of images- their promiscuous transit from one site of meaning to another- to the point of collapse." (pg. 99) Also articles on artists Karen Carson, Eric Fischl, William Tucker & other topics, many well-reproduced images, contemporary ads, reviews, etc. See Shoaf, Section IV, No. 190, pg. 188. From the collection of Jim McCrary, a poet & educator who has long resided in Lawrence, Kansas, where he was a friend & associate of WSB during his later years. The exhibit on which this article is based moved from LA to Lawrence during late 1996- early 1997, & McCrary is credited among the acknowledgments in its catalog. A fine late WSB art-related collectible with important insight into his art & significant provenance. In fine condition with only very mild wear & scratching to front, back covers & spine; mild-to-moderate wear, bumps & creases at edges & corners of same esp. at & near lower left corner of front cover with three tiny pin-prick gauges; area of moderate spot-stains at upper half of spine extending slightly to mid-side edges of covers esp. front cover; the date "10/28" written in light, thin ink just below & left of title on front cover. Interior very fine with only very light waves & creases mostly at upper edges & corners of some page leaves. Fine. [Item #2996]
