Trobar No. 2

New York, NY: Trobar, 1961. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "...TROBAR will not be confined to the poetry of any single approach. The purpose of TROBAR is to publish American poetry of intensity and immediacy, apparitions of the native duende, articulate in the power of word, dynamic in the space of music, made with all the powers of poetry, moving alive and passionate." So wrote Paul Blackburn, key associate of the "Deep Image" cadre of poets, of which Trobar Magazine was virtually the primary outlet for. What is interesting about the "Deep Image" literary criticism of Jerome Rothenberg and Robert Kelly is that it was one of the earliest attempts by an active figure in mid-century American poetry, particularly, to systematize and describe literary approach or poetic process. Even more interesting is its placement in relation to other poetic manifestos of the age; Charles Olson had only published "Projective Verse" 11 years earlier, and his influence on the contributors and the tone of the magazine is clear. Olson is mentioned by name in Robert Kelly's "NOTES ON THE POETRY OF DEEP IMAGE," but departs from Olson's theories in his aspiration to "...substitute the centrality of image for the centrality of syllable & line as a way of access to the happening of a poem." Another interesting feature of Trobar is the rapid changing of type size to fit in the work they wanted to fit in. Seymour Faust appears with eleven short poems on one page; likewise, Kelly's "NOTES..." appears in shrunken font, with other poems, like Robert Duncan's "A Poem Slow Beginning" and Ed Dorn's "A Change in the Weather." All in all a unique and important production, and a key publication in understanding the landscape of literary New York in the early 1960s.
