An American Avant Garde: First Wave Exhibition Catalog

Columbus, OH: The Ohio State University, 2001. First Printing. Softcover. A catalog for an exhibition "Featuring the William S. Burroughs Collection and work by other avant garde artists" as stated on front cover, from the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of The Ohio State University, held there during May 15 - August 25, 2001. A rare glimpse into this premiere archive of our Beat-&-Beyond icon, with images of notebooks, scrapbooks, letters & myriad ephemera, many reproduced only here. Also images of other writer/artists' works from WSB's personal collection, inspired by & echoing his ideas, including postcards from Genesis P. Orridge, a letter from Paul Bowles, a page from Brion Gysin's notebook, etc. With introductions by curators John M. Bennett & Geoffrey D. Smith; & a most informative essay, "Safe Harbor: A Short History of William S. Burroughs' Personal Papers" by James Grauerholz, foremost authority & guardian of the WSB legacy, who as he writes in the essay "...remained at his side until the end, doing all that I could to support and assist him in his work and in his life." See Shoaf, Section IV, No. 255, pg. 196. From the collection of Jim McCrary, a poet & educator who has long resided in Lawrence, Kansas, where he was a friend & associate of WSB; a member of Burroughs Communications led by Grauerholz. A scarce & outstanding rarity with distinguished provenance, for the serious WSB collector-scholar. In fine condition with only mild rubbing, scratching & sparse, short, faint creases at front, back covers & spine; very light wear & tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; sparse, light spotting in blank area of back cover. Interior very fine with only tiny bump-waves at corners of some page leaves; short, very faint semi-circular dimple-crease not obscuring text or image at upper area of same. Fine. [Item #3008]
