New York, NY: Corinth Books, 1960 (1968). Fifth Printing. Softcover. An iconic book charting what it then--in 1960--referred to as "The Beat Scene," this landmark publication is as impressive for the list of contributors it contains as for what is actually in it. While the actual work contained within the book is of obvious interest and quality, perhaps most remarkable are the Fred McDarrah photographs. For example, there is an image of Jack Kerouac in City Lights Bookstore that many have seen, where Kerouac is "dictating a poem" to be typed out by a young woman sitting next to him. What most haven't seen are the pictures of the others in the room--Lew Welch & Albert Saijo--nor know that these were work sessions for what became the Kerouac/Welch/Saijo collaboration "Trip Trap" (Berkeley, CA: Grey Fox Press, 1973). Other rarities abound within this publication, such as photos of Ted Joans' "biannual birthday party," and early photographs of every contributor listed in this volume. This is the way they looked--and wrote--during the height of their activity in New York City and San Francisco during the late 1950s, which makes this book of immense intrigue and historical value. Book in fine condition with minor rubbing to front, back covers; slight shelf-wear throughout esp. at all fine-edges; minor, scattered stains, browning to back cover. Fine. [Item #3041]
