Giorno Poetry Systems Catalogue Issue #19

New York, NY: Giorno Poetry Systems Institute Inc., 1989. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. John Giorno, the venerable poet-artist-impresario associated with Andy Warhol & William S. Burroughs, presents this catalog from the high-water mark of his multi-media productions & activism. Featuring the first appearance of William S. Burroughs' short story, "Senor Kaposi," which begins on the front cover & is probably WSB's most profound creative response to the AIDS crisis at the height of its virulence. With photo-illustration of WSB by Stephen Kroninger (pg. 12); GPS offerings including the now-rare & classic spoken word LPs, mostly featuring WSB among others; a solicitation for The Aids Treatment Project "started in support small organizations that help people with AIDS"; & more. On the back cover & elsewhere in the issue are references to "222 Bowery, New York, NY 10012," the address of the building in which "The Bunker," WSB's home in pre-gentrified lower Manhattan from 1974-1982, was located. It is still reverently preserved with his effects by Giorno. Schottlaender, C596, pg. 84; Shoaf, Section II, No. 242, pg. 98. From the collection of Jim McCrary, a poet & educator residing in Lawrence, Kansas, where he was a friend & associate of WSB during his later years. An exemplary relic of a time & place now consigned to history, & an important WSB collectible. In near-fine condition with vertical crease through middle of front, back covers & interior; very mild browning to edges of covers & spine; one small, faint water(?) stain-outline at lower right corner of front cover; very slight wear & bumping of edges & corners of covers & spine. Interior very fine except for crease decreasingly present throughout page leaves as noted above. Near Fine. [Item #3077]
