All the poems relate to the artist Arshile Gorky (1904 - 1948), whose short, brilliant, turbulent & tragic life & work are referred to obliquely, "...for the last thing I would have learned from Gorky is to write poems about Gorky." (from author's acknowledgements, pg. 4) With English & Spanish-language texts on opposite pages. As noted in the colophon (in Spanish), this copy is from an edition of 1000 officially published on March 31, 1966. With reproduction of detail from the Gorky painting "Betrothal" on front cover. Softcover original in sewn binding. A desirable Rothenberg rarity, in near-fine condition with only mild-to-moderate rubbing & scratching of front, back covers & blank spine; a few small spot-stains at blank lower right area of back cover; light wear & tiny bumps at all edges & corners; mild browning & sparse spotting at edges of text block. Interior very fine with only very faint, light browning at blank margins of page leaves; tiny bumps at corners & tiny spots at blank margins of a few of same. Near Fine. [Item #3107]
