Los Angeles, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1972. Limited First Trade Edition. Softcover. "A poet's truest biography is the history of his created forms and sensibility. This comprehensive selection from Parker Tyler's verse reveals his boldness, strength, and above all, his vital expression of the substance of erotic experience." (from blurb-biography, pg. 155). Parker Tyler (1904-1974) was a prolific avant-garde art & especially film critic as well as an acclaimed poet. He collaborated with the venerable Proto-Beat-&-Beyond figure Charles Henri Ford on the legendary & now very collectible surrealist magazine, View, during the 1940s. Tyler, like Ford, was a fearlessly pioneering gay writer at a time when this was underground & scandalous amid the established culture & society. One of 1000 trade softcover copies published by the iconic Black Sparrow Press, as noted in colophon. With the lengthy, innovative poem "The Granite Butterfly," dedicated to his lifelong partner Charles Boultenhouse & the great poet Philip Lamantia, originally published in 1945 by the sui generis polymath Bern Porter, & considered his masterpiece. Frontispiece portrait of the poet by Pavel Tchelitchew (about whom Tyler wrote a book of art criticism).
