Seattle, WA: Dragon Gate, Inc., 1985. First Edition. Signed by John Woods to James Perrizo. "We must deal with food and shelter. We must attend to our persistent sexuality. We must find out what to do when we meet someone on a narrow bridge over the rapids. We must live with our dreams, the projections of our inward singularity. And death. Not death, really, but the voyage. Not that we die, but that we grow old and die." (excerpt from essay by Woods quoted on front flap) A stately collection of poems by John Woods (1926-1995), a poet's poet who was also a professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The poems were selected from the six volumes first published between 1955 & 1976 by Indiana University (his alma mater) Press. On the title page, Woods has hand-written: "To Jim/ (Signed) John/ woods." "Jim" is James Perrizo (1944-2006), a major collector & scholar of the Beats & Beyond who was an assistant to Edie Parker, Jack Kerouac's first wife. A beautiful production, & an essential Woods collectible with important provenance & association. Book in very fine condition with only two small-medium size light stains at side edge of text block; two very faint, small scuff marks on blank black portion of front cover; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Unclipped dust jacket also in very fine condition with only light wear & creasing at edges & corners of front, back cover & spine esp. upper corners; one tiny dimple that does not penetrate surface at spine near mid-right edge.
