American Poetry and Poetics: Poems and Critical Documents from the Puritans to Robert Frost

Garden City, NY: Anchor Books/ Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1962. First Edition. Softcover. "American poetry is riddled with contradictions. Much of our best poetry has been written against the grain of American life, yet much of our best poetry has proclaimed that America is its subject and our life its theme." (from editor's preface, "Tradition and Invention in American Poetry") A classic compilation of American poetry spanning three hundred years, from the 1640s through 1940s, from John Cotton through Robert Frost & all the major figures in between- Dickinson, Emerson, Melville, Poe, Whitman et al. Edited & with a preface by the distinguished poet, professor & essayist Daniel G. Hoffman (1923-2013), this survey is divided into two parts: Poems by major American poets presented chronologically, in sections for each individual poet; & selected prose documents on critical theory presented in the same manner. Softcover original, first edition as stated on copyright page. With front cover illustration by Ben Shahn. This copy is from the collection/estate of the late James Perrizo (1944-2006), a major collector & scholar, & is most likely among his earliest acquisitions, from late high school or early college. On several pages are marginalia in blue ink, presumably by Perrizo, mostly brackets & circles but also translating archaic words & terms into modern definitions. A venerable literary resource, enriched with Perrizo's early, knowledge-thirsty hand-writings. In fine condition with only mild rubbing, browning, scratching & sparse, faint creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear, tiny bumps & a few miniscule tears to edges & corners of same; very light browning & wear to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves; marginalia noted above which we believe enhances & adds insight into this item. Fine. [Item #3160]
