Attacks of Taste

New York, NY: Gotham Book Mart, 1971. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. "It should be noted...that the work which ultimately led to this volume began as a project to increase and improve the reading habits of the girls in New York City's Elizabeth Barrett Browning Junior High School. In the hope that their responses would help stimulate worthwhile reading, several prominent writers were asked: "Which book or books were your favorites or influenced you most as a teenager and why?" We accepted the concept that "favorite" and "influential" were virtually synonymous in this context and believe that the contributors considered the words interchangeable." (from editors' Introduction) The project was so successful & had such an impact on the young students that many more letters were solicited from famous writers, & this compilation was published by the proprietors of the venerable, now-gone Gotham Book Mart enterprise. Among the iconic literary figures who contribute their brief, original words of wisdom for young readers, & really for those of all ages, are W.H. Auden, Paul Bowles, John Cheever, Will Durant (who with his wife Ariel wrote the monumental History of Civilization series), Allen Ginsberg (who notes in his letter that as a teenager in college, William S. Burroughs introduced him to Yeats, Spengler, Blake & Shakespeare), John Hersey, Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer, John Updike, Tennessee Williams & many more. What struck us as the epitome of literary surrealism is that sharing the company of these greatest authors & poets of their time & beyond is none other than RICHARD NIXON, sitting first-term president at the time of publication (1971). If one of the definitions of surrealism is the juxtaposition of disparate people & objects, this has to be one of the great examples of its application in a literary compilation as far as we're concerned. Where else will you find "Tricky Dick" & Allen Ginsberg as contributors in the same volume? One of a limited edition of 500 copies numbered & signed by the editors on colophon page. This is copy No. 274/500. A beautiful production with titles affixed to front cover & spine. In publisher's completely blank, white dust jacket. A most unusual & wonderful collectible that defies categorization. Book in very fine condition, virtually mint inside & out. Blank dust jacket in good-to-near-fine condition with mild rubbing, spotting & scratching to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; a few tiny gauge-holes & short tearing at & near lower spine-edge; one small water (?) stain at lower edge of front cover near right corner; smaller of same near left edge of back cover. Very Fine / Good/ Near Fine. [Item #3175]
