The Special View of History

Berkeley, CA: Oyez Press, 1970. First Edition. Softcover. The towering (literally & figuratively) American poet Charles Olson (1910-1970) defines The Special View of History as "An attempt to state a view of reality which yields a stance nexal to the practice of verse, narrative and theater now. A course of study which proceeds on the level of history and of a concept of man with the dynamic first proposed in Projective Verse." (author's preamble, pg. 13) Culled from transcripts & notes of lectures delivered by Olson at the fabled Black Mountain College during 1956, this critical-philosophical prose work expands upon the ideas he set forth in Projective Verse (1950) & Human Universe (1951). Edited & with an informative introduction by the great Ann Charters, among the first & foremost authorities & biographers of Jack Kerouac. Although "The Estate of Charles Olson" is referred to in the copyright page, Charters refers to Olson in the present tense & this certainly was one of the first posthumous publications to appear after his death early in the year of its publication (January 10, 1970). With front cover photograph by Charters of a mural at Black Mountain College (detail) by Jean Charlot. First softcover edition in sewn binding. A handsome production of the Oyez Press, the imprint of Robert Hawley, who studied at Black Mountain with Olson & other luminaries in its waning days, in which the lectures that form the basis of this volume were presented. An essential acquisition for the Olson student & collector. In fine condition with mild rubbing, browning & scratching to front, back covers & spine; light wear, tiny bumps & creases to edges & corners of same; one mostly vertical, faint crease at upper & upper-left edges of back cover which decreasingly echoes onto last few page leaves; mild spotting & browning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only creasing just noted above; tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Fine. [Item #3177]
