Portraits of Poets

Martin, TN: Tennessee Poetry Press, 1970. First Edition. Softcover. "When I first saw all the drawings in this book, I was filled with a sense of grief, and I wrote and told Rose Graubart about it. I liked the drawings and wanted them. Rose is a Lioness. She was simply outraged. She came back with a marvelous letter defending the joy of the drawings...Grief and joy are the same! They make a world, like our planet, and that world was in the poets' faces. It is like the muscle of an artist's arm. Work, certainly, love, gratitude, drawing-as-knowing, from the cave artists hunting bison by drawing them, down to now." (from "Foreword: Grief and Joy" by Stephen Mooney) A book of illustrations by the late artist-writer Rose Graubart, wife of the esteemed poet David Ignatow (1914-1997, like WSB) who is the subject of one of these penetrating portraits, along with such Beat-&-Beyond eminences as Robert Bly, Allen Ginsberg, Denise Levertov, Jerome Rothenberg, Ed Sanders, Gary Snyder & many others. Rose & David were well-acquainted with all the great poets portrayed here. With a most enthusiastic Foreword by poet Stephen Mooney, also among those drawn by the artist in this book. A wonderful literary-artistic rarity, in fine condition with only mild rubbing to front, back covers & spine; light wear & tiny bumps to edges & corners of same; faint, short crease at/near upper right corner of front cover extending through interior & upper left corner of back cover. Interior very fine except for creasing noted above effecting only blank margin areas of page leaves; miniscule bumps at corners of same. Fine. [Item #3193]
