Invitation to Preview Exhibition

Boston, MA: Rolly-Michaux Gallery, 1979. First Printing. Single Folded Sheet. A rare piece of ephemera relating to Karel Appel (1921-2006), the esteemed Dutch artist-sculptor-poet who was a founder of the avant-garde CoBrA (for Copenhagen, Brussels & Amsterdam) art movement during the late 1940s. This is an invitation to a "special preview exhibition" of Appel's sculpture & works on paper held on October 13, 1979 at the Rolly-Michaux gallery in Boston. Single sheet of thick paper folded vertically in two, glossy on recto (front, rear panels) & matte finishes on verso (interior panels). With bold color reproduction of Appel's "Child Prodigy" lithograph (1976) on front panel; black-&-white images of the artist & one of his works along with quote & information on interior panels; & chronology with major milestones & exhibitions of Appel's life & work through 1971 on rear panel. A beautiful production, & a very scarce Appel collectible from the mid-later period of his long, prolific career. In very fine condition with only mild rubbing on surface of front panel, barely effecting bold color image; short, faint crease-bumps at upper corners of same extending through interior & rear panel; a few tiny creases & lightest wear at & near outer fold-spine. Very Fine. [Item #3196]
