ISBN: 0807105988
Baton Rouge, LA: Louisiana State University Press, 1980. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Robert Hershon to James Perrizo. "In his title poem, Robert Hershon embraces his friends. This collection, which brings together new work and poems from little magazines and small-press books, shows him to be a writer who values friendships...Hershon's voice is filled with humor, compassion, and insight. His zest encircles his readers like a public hug." (from back cover) A wonderful mid-career collection of ninety-one poems, new at the time & selected from his prolific oeuvre, by the acclaimed & award-winning poet Robert Hershon. Not easy to place in any category or "school" of poetry, a reader might consider him among other things a poet whose muse is his native New York City & its people. First trade-format softcover edition, published simultaneously with first hardcover edition. This copy is hand-inscribed & signed by Hershon on the shorter title page/ front endpaper: "For Jim Perrizo,/ with all best/ wishes. May the/ gods bless the/ audience!/ (signed) Robert Hershon." James Perrizo (1944-2006) was an important Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who once served as an assistant to Edie Parker, Jack Kerouac's first wife. An essential Hershon collectible with rich association & a particularly exuberant inscription which must have been written just before a reading by the poet. In merely good condition due mainly to front, back covers & spine: Moderate rubbing, spotting, browning, scratching, soiling & staining of same, particularly visible on manila-colored background; mild wear, tiny bumps & creases at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing & spotting to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior mostly very fine except for thin area of (water?) staining at & near blank side edges of first 8-or-so page leaves; tiny bumps at corners of a few of same. Good. [Item #3212]
