Orono, ME: The National Poetry Foundation/ University of Maine, 1986. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. "Each of the two sections begins with a writer who can, with some confidence, be seen as a point of origin for this moment in writing. From there, I have edited according to an intuitive principle I can only describe as complimentary difference. The arrangement of critical materials...is more thematic, and is intended to show how the concurrent discourse on poetics...relates to, and illuminates, the writing." (from editor & contributor Ron Silliman's Preface, "Language, Realism, Poetry," pg. xxii) A landmark, massive anthology of contemporary poetry & its theories as of the mid-1980s, edited & with contributions by Ron Silliman, the prolific poet (among many other endeavors) based in San Francisco who was originally associated with the "Language poetry" movement. The volume is organized into three sections, "East," "West" & "Second Front." The first two sections contain poems & excerpts by noted poets of the eastern & western parts of the USA respectively; & the third section is devoted to prose that illuminates the various methods, movements & schools of poetry practiced at this time & these places. Contributors include Charles Bernstein, Clark Coolidge, Jackson Mac Low, Bob Perelman, Kit Robinson, Silliman & many other poets, theorists & academics. From the well-known to relatively obscure, the contributors add up to a comprehensive picture of American poetic theory & practice during the later twentieth century. With title poem by Robinson; preface by Silliman & notes on contributors including concise bibliographies. This is the first softcover edition, published simultaneously with the first hardcover edition during 1986. A second edition with different cover design was issued in 2001. An essential collectible for the serious scholar of American verse, in exceptionally very fine condition with only some rubbing at thin edge between side & lower edges of text block; otherwise all but mint inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #3234]
