Vigilante Two, Fall 1970

Calgary, Alberta, Canada: Piffer, Phil, 1970. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Clayton Eshleman. This second vintage number of the poetry journal edited & published in Canada by Phil Piffer features a poem by Clayton Eshleman, the esteemed & prolific poet who has long resided in Michigan, quite near us ("The Cusp," pgs. 4-7). Interestingly, the poem is initially dated January 11, 1970, with two dates of revision during May & June of that year. The following stanza was likely penned on the first, unrevised date: "O Charles Olson is dead!/ Bear his body to the blue/ at heart of the fire of year!" Olson, the great Black Mountain-&-Beyond poet, had died the previous day, January 10. On contents page, next to his reference, Eshleman has hand-signed his name in bold black ink. Also in this issue are two poems by Margaret Atwood, long before being catapulted to fame with The Handmaid's Tale (& its seemingly limitless franchise). Atwood is in fact not included in the marquee of names on front cover (although Eshleman is). With many other contributions, including by acclaimed Canadian poets Victor Coleman & Barry McKinnon; front cover illustration by Richard Crack; back cover illustration by Andrew Suknaski (who also provides four illustrated poems on pgs. 39-42); short notes on contributors. Magazine format in stapled wrappers with over-affixed cloth spine. An exemplary Mimeo Revolution-era specimen, & a most scarce & desirable rarity for the Atwood & Eshleman collector, especially with the latter's signature. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing to front & back covers; light wear & a few tiny bumps, thin creases at edges & corners of same; one short, closed vertical tear at upper right edge of back cover close to spine. Interior very fine with only small bump-waves at corners of page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3260]
