Los Angeles, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1975. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Stephen Stepanchev. "Clouds move over the Empire State/ Like sheep/ As life accelerated-/ It was like the film of a rose/ Blooming before my eyes.// It was a preview of eternity:/ The buried treasures of the self/ All dug up and open to view/ Like a city judged and forgiven." (last two stanzas, "A Change," pg. 39) A collection of poems by Stephen Stepanchev (1915-2017), a quietly accomplished American poet of no particular school, who wrote with evocative clarity to conjure the larger universe within small, everyday details. As notable for his longevity (he lived to the age of 102) as his works over many decades, Stepanchev lived most of his life & was an esteemed professor in NYC. In addition to poetry, he was the author of an acclaimed critical study, American Poetry since 1945 (1966). One of 200 hardcover copies hand-numbered & signed by the poet at colophon, this is copy No. 105/200. An exemplary Black Sparrow production, & a key collectible in the Stepanchev oeuvre. In very fine condition with only mild rubbing & sunning esp. at & near edges of illustrated front & blank back boards; mild wear, rubbing & sunning at edges & corners of same; slight amount of faint spot-staining to paper title-author strip affixed to cloth spine; very light browning & sparse spotting to edges of text block, esp. upper edge. Interior very fine, virtually mint. Very Fine. [Item #3262]
