ISBN: (ISSN)00483028
New York, NY: Poetry in Review Foundation, 1982. First Printing. Softcover. "That poetry in America is treated with indifference and contempt, like minor actors buried at the bottom of a theatrical bill, is a melancholy and infuriating fact. But though essentially solitary, his audience tiny and scattered across the country, the American poet continues to make art out of the self and an intractable culture, then launches his book into the void. For ten years, Parnassus...has created a forum where poets' work can be seriously looked at, where contrary ideas and diverse voices- the elegant and the penetrating, the political and the meditative, the operatic and the intimate- can be blended into a pleasurable ensemble." (from editor's preface, "The Poetry of Reviewing," pgs. 7-8) This Tenth Anniversary Issue of the critical journal edited & published by noted author Herbert Leibowitz features a thoughtful review-essay by Darryl Pinckney, mainly about Beat Generation Founding Father Allen Ginsberg, & more incidentally Peter Orlovsky & Michael McClure, entitled "The May King." Officially a review of three mostly prose works, Ginsberg & Orlovsky's Straight Heart's Delight: Love Poems and Selected Letters (1980); Ginsberg's Composed on the Tongue (1980) & McClure's Scratching the Beat Surface (1982), Pinckney's article offers a broader survey of Ginsberg's life & oeuvre, & its place in the American canon. A painting of Ginsberg by Alice Neel is reproduced opposite a page of the review. Also a review of poetry collections by Robert Bly & Philip Levine by Marjorie Perloff; an illustration by Romare Bearden & many more articles, artworks including front cover illustration by Guy Davenport, & photographs. With contemporary ads, brief notes on contributors. A key collectible number of this venerable literary journal that is still being published twice-yearly as of this writing, especially for the Ginsberg scholar-aficionado. In fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps & creases at edges (esp. spine edges) & corners of same; mild wear & occasional spotting, scratching to edges of text block, esp. upper edge.
