Santa Barbara, CA: Christopher's Books, 1974. First Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Robert Peters to James Perrizo. A volume of poems by Robert Peters (1924-2014), the towering American poet, playwright, critic & scholar who was originally a specialist of Victorian literature. By the 1970s, Peters was a prolifically creative writer who had embraced & celebrated his homosexuality. This exemplary collection is divided into two parts, "Germany" & "England," recounting his travels & adventures in these localities with poems & short diaristic passages. Small-format softcover, one of the publisher's titles in its "Hip-Pocket Series." With photograph of Peters in a garden setting by Holly Wright wrapped around front, back covers & spine; drawing of Peters by acclaimed artist Don Bachardy opposite colophon. On the title page, Peters has hand-inscribed & signed: "For Jim-/ Gary, as you know did/ not last long after/ this book-/ no/ connection-/ He always wanted to/ die, so finally shot/ himself/ (signed) Robert/ (doodle-flourish)." "Jim" is the late James Perrizo, a major Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who was a friend of & correspondent with Peters. As for "Gary," we presume he is Gary Albers, who is identified as the printer of this production in the colophon. What were Peters' & Perrizo's relationship with Gary? Was he (& a Melissa Albers referred to in colophon as designer) by any chance related to the Bauhaus/Black Mountain College legend Josef Albers? We wonder. A very desirable rarity in the Peters canon, especially with this intimate & macabre inscription, association & provenance. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing, scratching & a bit of light spot-staining to front, back covers & spine; lightest wear & a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners of same; several small spot-stains at side edge of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at upper corners of page leaves; otherwise virtually mint. Very Fine. [Item #3266]
