Wild Dog, Vol. II, No. 11, October 1964

Salt Lake City, UT: Wild Dog, 1964. First Printing. Stapled Sheets. Signed by Diane Wakoski at her contribution. This number of the exemplary product of the 1960s "Mimeo Revolution," edited by Gino Clays & Drew Wagnon & with the legendary Edward Dorn as "Contributing Editor," features a lengthy essay (titled a "Non-Review") by Dorn about two contemporary plays then-recently performed off-off-Broadway by LeRoi Jones, later known as Amiri Baraka. Dorn's essay quotes extensively & strays broadly from the plays, "Dutchman" & "The Slave." Also, two poems by Deep-Image-&-Beyond now elder master Robert Kelly; & "George Washington Poem" by Diane Wakoski, the esteemed & prolific Michigan-based poet. Just below her printed name at the end of the poem, Wakoski has hand-written her signature with characteristic series of vertical doodles. With many other contributors, letters, "Dead Sea Scrawls" commentary by Clays(?) under the name "Gino il tedeseo." Bold, riveting front cover artwork that to this writer anticipates The Residents' graphics style circa "Mark of the Mole" about two decades later, uncredited but probably by "Art Editor" Madeline Hudson. Special small sheets over front cover & contents page. Another most significant & desirable rarity in this series, rarer still for having been published in Salt Lake City rather than NYC, especially for Dorn & Wakoski collectors. Complete & in relatively near-fine condition for such an old & fragile production: Mild rubbing, mild-to-moderate browning to front, back cover sheets; short series of small-to-tiny holes at blank area of small front over-sheet; one short, closed horizontal tear & some chips with loss of paper to thin right edge of blank back cover; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of all sheets; last sheet/ back cover is detached from rest of issue (apparently common to this number, many attempts at stapling that don't quite reach last sheet can be observed). Interior very fine except for items noted above; significant, inevitable browning of pulp-quality paper page leaves esp. at mostly blank margins. Near Fine. [Item #3272]
