Looking at Pictures

ISBN: 0937815403
New York, NY: Hanuman Books, 1990. First Edition. Softcover. An erudite essay by Henry Geldzahler (1935-1994), the legendary Belgian-American art critic, curator & historian. The thirty-eighth number in the increasingly collectible series of miniature volumes published by Hanuman Books, the imprint of the venerable curator-impresario Raymond Foye & the acclaimed artist Francesco Clemente, produced in Madras, India by the Kalakshetra Press & officially published in NYC from the mid-1980s through mid-1990s. Another exemplary Hanuman production, softcover in blank, colored wrappers with sewn binding, in dust jacket with colorful portrait of the author in a languid, Wildean-Whitmanesque pose on front cover. Frontispiece reproduction of a painting by David Hockney, "Looking at Pictures (1976)" which depicts Geldzahler doing just that. Hockney & Geldzahler were close friends, & another Hockney painting, "Henry Geldzahler and Christopher Scott (1969)," a double-portrait depicting Geldzahler & his companion, was sold at auction earlier in the year of this writing (2019) for almost fifty-million dollars. A particularly desirable Geldzahler-Hanuman rarity. Book in very fine condition, substantially mint as such hand-crafted items can be inside & out. Dust jacket also in very fine condition with only slightest rubbing to front, back covers & spine; miniscule wear & a few tiny bumps, faint creases at edges & corners of same; slightest loss of gilt at author/ title letters on front cover (probably as issued). Very Fine. [Item #3284]
