Los Angeles, CA: UCLA Extension, The Writer's Program, 1985-1986. First Printings. Softcovers. All four issues signed by editor & contributor Clayton Eshleman. Four contiguous numbers of "A Literary Tri-Quarterly of the Whole Art" as its subtitle proclaims, all edited & with contributions of poetry or prose by Clayton Eshleman, who has signed each of these issues at the upper right margin of their second contents pages. Eshleman, the venerable & prolific award-winning American poet, translator & scholar, was based in California when these relatively early issues were published. Several years later, he & his wife Caryl (Managing Editor of Sulfur) would move to Michigan, where they still reside right next to our home headquarters of Ann Arbor. Sulfur 13 features Eshleman's poem "Tuxedoed Groom On Canvas Bride," along with three poems by the acclaimed Thom Gunn; an excerpt from a then just-published compilation of poems by the Gigantic (physically & intellectually) & gigantically influential Charles Olson & much more, including a rich section of "Notes, Correspondence, Reviews" as in all these issues. Sulfur 14 features an excerpt from "The Book of During" by Clark Coolidge; Eshleman's "The Excavation of Artaud"; "Visions Of Jesus" by the great ethno-poeticist Jerome Rothenberg & much more. Sulfur 15 is mostly devoted to a special section about, & translations of writings by, the French surrealist writer Michel Leiris. This section includes a portfolio of portraits of Leiris by Frances Bacon, Alberto Giacometti, Andre Masson & Pablo Picasso (whoa). We note here that all the issues are enriched with reproductions of artworks as cutting-edge as their poetry, including front cover color images of works by Bacon (Sulfur 15) & Cy Twombly (Sulfur 13). Besides his editorship, Eshleman contributes an essay on the work of Cesar Vallejo, whom he has extensively translated. Sulfur 16 features poems by Andre Codrescu; Coolidge; the esteemed, long Michigan-based Diane Wakoski; Rothenberg & many more. Eshleman & James Hillman engage in "Part One of a Discussion on Psychology and Poetry." Four prime issues of this most justly revered series, all signed by their mastermind & in relatively very fine condition: Sulfur 13 with only very light rubbing & a few short, faint creases to bright red front, back covers & spine; light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same esp. spine; sparse, tiny spots at edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at upper corners of some page leaves. Sulfur 14 with only miniscule wear at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; otherwise virtually as-new inside & out. Sulfur 15 with only very light rubbing to front, back covers & spine; very light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; one faint, angled crease at & from middle upper edge toward right edge of front cover; a few tiny spot-scratches with loss of surface to blank black area of back cover. Interior very fine with only very small bump-creases at upper corners of some page leaves. Sulfur 16 with only miniscule wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; a few small-to-tiny spot-stains at/near spine & lower spine-back cover edge; otherwise pristine inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #3314]
