Incognito, Ergo Sum with: Original Cover Artwork

London, England: Ragged Lion Press, 2015. Limited First Edition; Original Artwork. Hardcover Chapbook; Large Single Sheet. Signed twice by Charles Plymell; & signed artwork. A chapbook of poems by Charles Plymell, the great American poet, editor, publisher & Legendary Literary Outlaw. Among the poems are "Smoke Signals After Grant Hart's Visit," a tribute to his friend the Husker Du musician (1961-2017) that can be read with hindsight as something of a prospective elegy; & "Collateral Damage," dedicated to Joanna McClure, the poet & former wife of Michael McClure. One of 70 hand-numbered copies signed by Plymell at colophon, this is copy No. 16/70. A beautiful letterpress production with boards, cloth spine & sewn binding by Bill Roberts' Bottle of Smoke Press for Ragged Lion Press. Plymell has also hand-written his signature on title page, above his printed name. With reproduction of Plymell's artwork pun-titled "Descartes Before the Horse" on front cover. The chapbook's title is also a pun on the great French philosopher's famous saying, "Ego cogito, ergo sum" ("I think, therefore I am"). We are pleased to include in this offer the original artwork that Plymell created for this production. The artwork consists of a large (11" x 15&1/8") thick sheet with a blown-up reproduction of a contemporary engraving of Descartes, on which Plymell has hand-drawn an eye-mask to make him appear "incognito." In blank margin below the amended image is "Descartes by Charles Plymell" handwritten in black ink; & Plymell's signature & "#1" in blue ink. This may be the first of a limited edition in which Plymell hand-draws over a reproduction that includes the mask & original title. A one-of-a-kind, most desirable bundle for the Charles Plymell collector. Chapbook in very fine condition with only very light wear & rubbing to edges & corners of front, back boards; several tiny spots at spine & spine-edge; light red ink residue at upper edge of front board (almost certainly a slight flaw as issued in this hand-crafted item). Interior substantially mint with sumptuous handmade paper. Artwork in near-fine condition with one closed tear of appx. 1&1/2" extending from upper left edge of illustrated recto barely effecting image; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners. Very Fine; Near Fine. [Item #3319]
