Ann Arbor, MI; Flint, MI;: OtherWind Press; MMMR Publications; White Lotus Farms/ One Pause Poetry, 1988; 2011; 2013. First Printings. Two Postcards; One Magazine in Stapled Wrappers. A most delightful package of collectible ephemera: (1) A postcard-sized broadside with the short poem "eronel" by John Sinclair, the legendary poet-writer-activist-marijuana-martyr-turned-elder-statesman. The poem is dedicated to Ken Mikolowski, the venerable poet, printer & publisher who with his late wife Ann founded & conducted the Alternative Press, which issued many items very similar to this OtherWind Press production. Despite its brevity, the poem is very compelling & evocative, with references to Edgar Allen Poe & Thelonious Monk. Undated, but we have confirmed it was published in 1988. (2) MMM (Michigan Medical Marijuana) Report magazine, Vol. 1, Issue 3, April 2011. This freely distributed magazine was concerned with the legal & popular status of Marijuana in Michigan, when the legality of medical marijuana was in its infancy. The cover article, "Free the Weed" (pgs. 18-19), is by Sinclair, who is listed on the masthead as a Staff Writer. There are several vintage photographs of Sinclair & the scene at the first Hash Bash at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor held during April 1, 1972 that accompany the article. Also many other contributions including a report on the then-40th Hash Bash that would take place during the month & year of this issue; a surfeit of contemporary ads, & even a central centerfold-style section with "Babe of the Month" opposite "Bud of the Month." The aesthetic of this issue & its ads is like a hybrid of High Times & a men's' magazine, with skimpily clad "nurse" models, etc. Front cover illustration repeating old image of Sinclair, reminiscent of Warhol. (3) Postcard with the poem "How Cavafy Found the Young Poet" by the acclaimed poet & writer Andrei Codrescu on recto. The poem is also dedicated to Ken Mikolowski, & is a dense piece of prose-poetry with many historic & literary allusions. On verso is information regarding several days of events under the title of "Art in the Garden: Fall Poetry Series." An evening with Codrescu is cited as the Keynote Event. The events were sponsored by White Lotus Farms, an Ann Arbor organic farm enterprise that still flourishes here, and the One Pause Poetry organization, also still active here & whose mission is "investigating beauty and revitalizing poetry in Michigan and beyond," as stated on its web site. Undated, but we have confirmed it was published in 2013. Three rare & desirable pieces, connected in spirit & in two cases by their dedication to our great friend & mentor Ken Mikolowski, all from his own collection. All three items in very fine condition, substantially mint except for miniscule bumps at a few corners of cards & magazine wrappers. Very Fine. [Item #3333]
