Tyuonyi 2

Santa Fe, NM: Tyuonyi/ Institute of American Indian Arts, 1986. First Printing. Softcover. Signed by Clayton Eshleman. " "TYUONYI" is a Keresan word meaning 'the meeting place,' and is the name of a major prehistoric ruin in northern New Mexico." (from copyright page) This second number of the literary journal edited by Philip Foss features two poems by Clayton Eshleman, the venerable American poet, translator & scholar who shortly after this issue was published moved from California to Michigan, where he & his wife Caryl still reside near us, our friends & mentors. The two poems, "The Tower" & "Spelunking the Skeleton," are exemplary of Eshleman's intensely evocative, visceral, impassioned style- almost chaotic yet somehow clearly structured & allusive. On the first contents page, Eshleman has hand-written his distinctive signature near top right edge. Also in this issue are contributions by the late, great avant-garde composer-performer-philosopher John Cage (two of his exemplary mestostic poems derived from the writings of Marshall McLuhan); Clark Coolidge; Jackson Mac Low; Nathaniel Tarn (also a Contributing Editor) & many more. With brief notes on contributors, front cover photograph of an ancient native frieze by Edward Ranney. A very rich, early issue of this collectible journal, especially with Eshleman's signature & contributions; a "meeting place" indeed for intense, riveting literary talents. In fine condition with only mild rubbing, spotting & occasional short, faint creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few small-to-tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; very light, sparse spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Fine. [Item #3334]
