Giorno Poetry Systems Catalogue # 20 with: "Demons in the Details" Poster

New York, NY; Paris, France: Giorno Poetry Systems Institute, Inc.; John Giorno & Ugo Rondinone, 1993; 2000. First Printings. Fold-Out Catalogue; Folded Poster. Two very rare productions by John Giorno (1936-2019), who just passed away earlier during the month of this writing (October 11, 2019). Giorno was a legendarily innovative poet & performance artist. He was famously filmed asleep by Andy Warhol, founded & conducted the "Dial-A-Poem" project, & created or collaborated in innumerable happenings, recordings, etc. over a long career. Among Giorno's key friends & associates was William S. Burroughs, for whom he maintained the Bunker, WSB's residence on the Bowery in NYC during the 1970s-80s. We offer these two outstanding ephemeral relics in tribute to this giant at the very eye of the Beat-&-Beyond hurricane: (1) Giorno Poetry Systems Catalogue #20, 1993, featuring a color photograph & close-up of "William S. Burroughs, August 17, 1991, five weeks after triple-bypass heart surgery" taken by Giorno on front panel. Offered in the catalog are the many then-available LPs, CDs, cassettes & pre-DVD videotapes featuring WSB & a veritable who's-who list of contributors including Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith, Anne Waldman, Frank Zappa & so many others. Collectors including this writer are very familiar with many of these now extremely rare & coveted items, & it is both delightful as well as un-nerving to see them all displayed being offered for so relatively little- if only we could turn back the clock! Single sheet divided into five panels with printing on both sides. Ann Arbor, MI then-home address stamp of Ken & Ann Mikolowski on recto as folded. Ken & the late Ann were the founders & conductors of the venerable Alternative Press which published many of the icons who also collaborated with Giorno. This & the following item are from the collection of & directly obtained by us from our friend & mentor, Ken Mikolowski. (2) Large poster (appx. 23 & 3/4" x 33 & 1/2") folded into eight sections as issued, with poem titled "Demons in the Details: For William Burroughs, Allan (sic) Ginsberg, Brion Gysin and Some Others" one side; group of twelve color photographs depicting a maniacal, menacing clown on the other. This poster is credited to Giorno, who presumably wrote the poem, & his husband, the acclaimed artist Ugo Rondinone, who probably provided the images. Produced in Paris, 2000. Two great rarities in one offering- long live the legacy of John Giorno! (1) in very fine condition with only very slight rubbing, a few short, faint creases & browning (the latter mostly at blank margins) to front & back panels; very slight wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners. Interior panels all but mint. (2) in fine condition, on thin, delicate glossy paper stock with very slight wear, faint creasing & tumbling to both surfaces of section; very mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Very Fine; Fine. [Item #3339]
