Beat Scene, No. 94, Late Summer 2019

Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2019. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This special issue of the indispensable Beat Scene magazine edited & published by Kevin Ring in the UK is dedicated to Beat Generation Founding Father Jack Kerouac, in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of his sad, early death on October 21, 1969. All of the articles relate to Kerouac's later years and are written by such luminaries as Jed Birmingham of Reality Studio fame; Ann Charters, who knew Kerouac & wrote the earliest biography & bibliography about him; John Montgomery who also knew his subject; Andrew Sarris, whose original 1967 New York Times review of Kerouac's Satori in Paris is reprinted; & many more including Ring himself. As ever, there are many reproductions of contemporary photographs of Kerouac & various items throughout. This being a special issue, there are no miscellaneous reviews, & it is printed in a smaller format than usual. It is worth quoting Ring's "First Words" (on first, index page) in its entirety: "In October 1969 Jack Kerouac died. His road to that day was begun around twelve years prior in 1957 when he finally gained something of a reputation with the publication of his novel On the Road. Something that he had sought turned out to be a poisoned chalice and his descent into alcoholic oblivion destroyed him in the next decade. There were a few highlights, even in these times, further books appeared. However he drew himself increasingly inward, mostly cutting off his old friends as he seemed constantly to relocate around America as the years went by. Despite popular perceptions he was always a quiet conservative man who simply wanted to be recognised as a writer. The grip that drink had on him demonised him, skewed his judgement and damaged him whenever he made a rare public appearance. But we're not here to bury him all over again. here are a few episodes in the last years of his life. We salute him. A magnificently flawed American Writer." Amen, & WE salute him! A very special number in this outstanding series that always lives up to its front-cover motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In brand-new condition with only a few tiny bumps at lower edge & corner of front cover as issued or from very slight jostling in transit from UK to USA. As new. [Item #3341]
