Burning Deck Postcards: The Third Ten

Providence, RI: Burning Deck Press, Circa 1976. Limited First Printing. Postcard-Broadsides in Envelope. This is the third in a series of four sets of ten postcards printed by Rosemarie & Keith Waldrop's Burning Deck Press during 1974-1978. This set was designed & printed exclusively by Rosemarie Waldrop as indicated on recto of envelope. The Waldrops are both acclaimed, venerable poets, translators & educators, & have published many journals & books with their own & other esteemed poets' works. Both are also proud alumni of the University of Michigan here in Ann Arbor. The four installments of this series were gathered into mailing envelopes with printing & graphics on recto. This third series features beautifully hand-produced letterpress postcard-broadsides of various shapes & sizes with poems by Aliki Barnstone, Michael Benedikt, James Camp, E. Hope-McCarthy, Lissa McLaughlin, Eli M. Mile, Arthur Oberg, Diane Wakoski & designer-printer Rosemarie Waldrop. Each card is uniquely designed, in many different fonts & several with background illustrations in a palimpsest style. Many of the poems are very short, Waldrop's (untitled) reads in its entirety: "looking for you in/ the gap between/ you/ & the gesture you just started/ & the road ahead." One of 150 (un-numbered) sets as noted on recto of envelope. A beautiful production, very rare & desirable, reminiscent of the packages of poetry & ephemera printed & dispatched by our good friend Ken mikolowski & his late wife Ann's Alternative Press during this same period. Complete & in very fine condition: Cards all in very-fine-to-mint condition with only slight, faint curvature toward recto at right side of Camp's card; vertical area at/ near right edge verso of Mile's card faded from purple-pink (quite possibly as issued). Envelope in relatively fine condition with only very light rubbing & occasional short, faint creasing to recto & verso; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners; one neat, short (appx. 1") tear along mid-lower edge; clasps of flap-fastener on verso missing. Very Fine. [Item #3398]
