This number of the Louisiana-centric literary journal published by the English Department of Southeastern Louisiana University & edited by Tim Gautreaux features a lone non-Louisianan (Michigander by way of California) contributor, the esteemed & prolific Diane Wakoski. At her contribution, the poem "House of Cards," Wakoski has hand-inscribed & signed: "Hot off the press for you, Jim-/ (signed) Diane Wakoski (with series of vertical doodles)/ 3 June 1990." "Jim" is James Perrizo (1944-2006), a dedicated Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who knew Wakoski & was especially devoted to collecting & studying her works, as this warm & familiar inscription attests. From what we've seen in Perrizo's vast Wakoski library & elsewhere, she rarely writes inscriptions or dates along with her signature. Also in this issue are contributions of fiction & poetry by Louisiana writers including Claire Bateman, LuAnne Keener, Michael Wilds, a conversation-interview with southern literary scholar & Louisiana State University professor Louis P. Simpson (1916-2005) conducted by William Parrill, & more. With brief notes on contributors, essays, a single review, illustrations etc. An attractive production, & a very collectible issue in this venerable series, especially with its inscription & signature dated right at time of publication, association & provenance.
