New Editions 2: An Anthology of Literary Discoveries

Berkeley, CA: Paperback Editions Limited, 1957. First Printing. Softcover. "This exciting second issue of NEW EDITIONS features....A romantic rhapsody of boyhood by Jack Kerouac, author of a novel soon to be published by Viking...." (from back cover) An otherwise mostly obscure anthology with a most notable contribution- by Jack Kerouac, Founding Father of the Beat Generation, published earlier during the same year that his "novel soon to be published by Viking"- that is, On the Road, appeared- the Big Bang of Beat notoriety along with Howl by Allen Ginsberg the previous year, & Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs two years later. This work, "Neal and the Three Stooges," is a fragment from Visions of Cody, included in the limited signed edition of excerpts produced in 1959; & the full, posthumous edition of 1972. Interestingly, the character "Neal Pomeray" here has the actual first name of Neal Cassady, Kerouac's real, legendary instigator-partner in adventures on whom "Cody Pomeray," as he is named in the two editions noted above, is based. See Charters, B4, pg. 56, which notes that 1000 copies of New Editions 2 were issued during 1957. Other contributors to this anthology include the great French writer-filmmaker Jean Cocteau (four poems translated by Francis Carmody), Catherine Gore, Robert Norris & others. A rare & significant literary collectible, especially for the Kerouac completist. In very fine condition with only slight rubbing & a few faint creases, scratches esp. to front cover & spine, hardly to back cover; very light wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; light rubbing & spotting to edges of text block esp. lower edge. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves; otherwise substantially pristine. Very Fine. [Item #3407]
