We are pleased to offer the first North American editions of Iron Horse, the long & exemplary poem by Allen Ginsberg dated July 22-23, 1966: (1) First-ever edition, from the first printing of 1000 copies, published in Canada by The Coach House Press during January 1973, with date of 1972 referred to on title page. All points in Morgan, A27a1.1 (pg. 37) are present. This is the very first issue of the poem, six-&-one-half years after it was originally written. A beautiful production, oblong softcover original with bold, colorful artworks of speeding trains on covers; muted background illustrations of trains on each page; & several graphic-diagram train-related illustrations interspersed with poem- all uncredited. (2) First USA edition, one of 10,000 copies published by City Lights Books (which as we all know was the publisher of the iconic Pocket Poets Series edition of Ginsberg's seminal Howl) during March 1974. All points in Morgan, A27a2.1(pg. 38) are present. This edition is exactly the same as (1) described above, except for different information on copyright page, no rear colophon & difference in colors of covers (mostly green where (1) is purple). Two most desirable & collectible first editions of an important early-mid career work by a Founding Father of the Beat Generation, both in very fine condition: (1) with only lightest rubbing & a few faint, thin scratches to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; a tiny bit of rubbing & spotting at edges of text block. Interior very fine with only slight browning at blank margins, edges of inner covers; miniscule bumps at upper corners of a few page leaves. (2) in almost exactly the same condition inside & out as (1) except without browning to inner covers; a few small spots to blank inner front cover. Very Fine. [Item #3429]
