The Paris Review Vol. 13 No. 49 (Summer 1970)
New York, NY: Sadruddin Aga Khan, 1970. First Printing. Softcover. This vintage number of the highly prestigious literary journal then-chiefly edited by George Plimpton along with such esteemed literary figures as Donald Hall & Tom Clark (its official Poetry Editor) features an interview with Charles Olson, the 'Maximus' intellectual & physical Giant of Black Mountain School-&-Beyond poetry. Olson (1910-1970) had passed away very early in the year this issue appeared, & although there is no editorial mention of this, it serves as a de facto tribute to the great, deep & innovative American poet. The interview (introduced & conducted by an unidentified interviewer) is incisive, with Olson demonstrating his erudition & good humor. Following the interview is a late untitled Olson poem, & there is a contemporary publisher's ad for his books. Also in this issue are contributions of poems by Clark, Robert Creeley, Kenward Elmslie, Joanne Kyger, New York School Beat-related icon Frank O'Hara, Aram Saroyan & many more. With prose fiction by the late, acclaimed James Salter & others; more contemporary ads; notes on contributors etc. Trade-format softcover in sewn binding. A very important & most collectible vintage issue in this venerable series, especially for the Olson student. Complete with intact, attached sheet of subscription cards & in near-fine condition with only mild-to-moderate rubbing, short creases to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same esp. at/ near upper right spine corner; light crease across length of spine; mild rubbing, scratching & occasional spotting at edges of text block.
