Sparrow 24: The Cards by Jerome Rothenberg

Los Angeles, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1974. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This twenty-fourth number of the collectible series of pamphlets, published by the venerable Black Sparrow Press & dated September 1974 on front cover, features the title poem by Jerome Rothenberg, the acclaimed inventor-master of the ethnopoetical method-philosophy. As Rothenberg explains in this excerpt from his brief introduction: "About a year ago I entered into a poetry game with Bernadette Mayer, Ed Friedman & seven other poets. We each selected a commercial picture postcard & sent a copy to the other participants, who then responded with a poem about each card, their own included." Rothenberg's ten poems, each based on one of the cards, are presented with Roman numerals & the postcards' titles. On front cover, as with other issues in this series, is a haunting quote of D.H. Lawrence that serves as a motto: "Living, I want to depart to where I am." With list of then-current publications by the Press on back cover. A rewarding production in the Rothenberg canon, & this significant series. In very fine condition with only a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners of front, back covers; hardly discernible light browning-spotting & short, faint creasing at/ near stapled spine. Interior virtually mint. Very Fine. [Item #3445]
