The Marihuana Papers

New York, NY: New American Library, 1968. First Softcover Edition Thus; Fifth Printing. Softcover. "One thing is certain about marihuana: there are stringent laws against it. But is it really harmful? Or innocuous? Or even beneficial? What is its relationship to sex? To violence? To addiction? In this book, comprehensive, objective evidence is presented- from doctors, scientists, historians, and writers. Some base their testimony on observation. Others on personal experience. This book may disturb many longstanding preconceptions. It cannot, however, be ignored." (from back cover) A well-known, still-consulted work first published in hardcover during 1966. This first mass-market softcover edition was first printed in April 1968 as stated on copyright page, which also states this copy as a fifth printing. The covers & spine are different from others we have seen, we believe this variation began with this fifth printing. There is no ISBN number reference, so we conclude that this copy dates to no later than the very early 1970s. While charmingly dated (down to the spelling of "marihuana"), a relic of another era, this collection contains very serious studies by respected members of the medical & academic fields. For our Third Mind purposes, the reasons to purchase this volume are the contributions of some of our favorite Beat-&-Beyond literary figures: Paul Bowles, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Terry Southern & some of their spiritual ancestors all weigh in with excerpts from their essays or fictional works. Edited by David Solomon, who introduces & intersperses the writers' excerpts with commentary; & with an introduction by Dr. Alfred R. Lindesmith. A reminder of the height of Marijuana's countercultural controversiality, & a relevant reference work even now, in an intermediate collectible form. In fine condition with only mild rubbing & a few short, faint creases to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; slight fading of yellow cover at spine; small chips at esp. upper & lower edges of same with very slight loss of surface; small chip with slight surface loss at lower left corner of back cover; very slight rubbing & browning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only slight browning mostly at blank margins of page leaves; tiny bumps & creases at esp. lower corners of same. Fine. [Item #3448]
