Bolinas, CA: Grey Fox Press, 1977. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. A volume of miscellaneous poems, letters & short biographical writings by Jack Kerouac, Founding Father of the Beat Generation. Compiled, edited & with an introduction by Donald Allen (1912-2004), the great editor & publisher well-known for his groundbreaking anthology, The New American Poetry 1945-1960, which includes contributions by Kerouac. As Allen states in his Editor's Note, "This book belatedly collects the poems Jack sent me and his letters and statements regarding his verse" which were not included in his previous anthologies or journals. Among the poems here are "San Francisco Blues: Two Choruses," MacDougal Street Blues," the title poem "Heaven" & more. The letters from Kerouac to Allen date from the late 1950s- early 1960s & are fascinatingly insightful. Frontispiece reproduction of an original drawing by Kerouac entitled "Doctor Sax and the Sea Shroud," drawn for Neal & Carolyn Cassady's children circa 1952-53. Reproduction of an iconic Kerouac photo portrait taken by Carolyn in 1952. Published by Allen's esteemed Grey Fox Press, this is the first trade-format softcover edition, presumed first printing, issued simultaneously with a hardcover edition during 1977. A slim but very important collectible in the Kerouac canon. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to bright silver front, back covers & spine; lightest wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; rubbing, moderate-to-significant spotting-browning at upper edge of text block; hardly discernible at lower & side edges of same. Interior very fine with only light browning at margins of blank inner covers; otherwise virtually mint. Very Fine. [Item #3449]
