New York, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. "Mauve Gloves & Madmen, Clutter & Vine proves again that Wolfe is a brilliant observer of style who is also a master stylist. He shows, also, the range of his gifts- he can write about aerial combat over North Vietnam ("The Truest Sport: Jousting with Sam and Charlie") with as much vividness as he can about the stratosphere of Society. His insight, wit, and panache are, in a word, unequaled..." (from rear flap) A classic compendium of essays by Tom Wolfe (1930-2018), the great American author who basically invented the genre of New Journalism, which paralleled the Gonzo Journalism of Hunter S. Thompson. This work was published in the midst of the 1970s, & famously coined the term "The Me Decade" to define that period, a bizarre & decadent hangover from the previous decade of the 1960s that Wolfe was so memorably a part of. With many delightful, insightful illustrations by the author throughout. Offered here is the first edition, hardcover in original unclipped dust jacket, first printing as stated on copyright page. Between rear endpaper & pastedown-inner back cover we found & have retained an enriching piece of ephemera: The original review of this volume by Paul Gray in the December 27, 1976 issue of Time magazine, two pages neatly removed from the issue & folded once horizontally. A canonical work by one of the most probing, dazzling & hilarious commentators on American culture in its history; a most desirable rarity in exceptionally very fine condition: Book with only a few tiny smudge-spots at blank black cloth areas of front, back covers & spine-edge of back cover; just a bit of faint, tiny spotting at upper edge of text block. Interior very fine with only light browning to rear endpaper & pastedown-inner back cover (probably result of ephemera placement there); otherwise substantially mint. Dust Jacket with only mild browning to mostly blank upper margins & edges of front cover, flaps; a few miniscule bumps at edges & corners. Ephemera in very fine condition with only light browning; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners. Very Fine / Very fine. [Item #3463]
