The George Washington Poems

New York, NY: Riverrun Press, 1967. First Edition. Softcover. Signed by Diane Wakoski. "The truth is that George cut down his father's cherry tree,/ his ax making chips of wood so sweet with sap they could be/ sucked, and he stripped the bark like old bandages/ from the tree for kindling./ In this tree he defied his dead father,/ the man who could not give him an education and left him to/ suffer the ranting of Adams and others,/ those fat sap-cheeked men who said George did not know enough/ to be president." (from "George Washington and The Loss of His Teeth," pg. 11) A very early collection of poems by Diane Wakoski, the acclaimed & prolific poet who has long resided in Michigan, associated with the Deep Image School, the Beat Generation & beyond. The common theme, or at least launching point for myriad musings, is George Washington, the iconic Foremost Founding Father of the USA. On the title page, next to her printed name, Wakoski has hand-written her signature with characteristic series of vertical doodles below it in black ink. This is the first edition with copyright date of 1967, presumed second state with $2 price (in the form of a stamped "2" next to image of a dollar bill) on front endpaper. Large-format softcover in sewn binding with photograph of the Washington-related sculpture "The Generals" by Marisol Escobar & calligraphy by Marian Zazeela on front cover. An essential collectible in the Wakoski canon, especially with her signature. In good-to-near-fine condition with moderate rubbing, browning & short creasing to front, back covers & spine; moderate-to-significant spotting & light staining at same; mild wear & small-to-tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block.
