Montemora 3

New York, NY: The Montemora Foundation, Inc., 1977. First Printing. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Clayton Eshleman to James Perrizo. This very early number of the literary journal "devoted to international poetry," edited & with contributions by Eliot Weinberger, features three poems by Clayton Eshleman, the acclaimed & prolific poet, translator & scholar who has long resided near us in Michigan, our friend & mentor. Opposite the first poem ("36 Variations on Shiki's "furukabe no sumi ni ogukazu harami gumo" "), just above a macabre vintage illustration-collage of a spider about to attack a human child in its web, Eshleman has hand-written: "The vision spider/ discovers a young/ lad in her web./ for J.P./ - (initialed) CE/ 1990." "J.P." is the late James Perrizo, a devoted Beat-&-Beyond collector & scholar who befriended Eshleman & collected his works with particular completist intensity. Also in this issue are contributions of poems by Cid Corman, the great poet & editor who was one of Eshleman's early mentors; Rachel Blau DuPlessis, Octavio Paz (translated from Spanish into English by Weinberger); Ethnopoetics Master Jerome Rothenberg; Welsh poet & Beat devotee Iain Sinclair; an interview with the great British poet Basil Bunting (1900-1985) conducted by Dale Reagan & much more. With more illustrations throughout, reviews, notes on contributors. A rare, early issue in this esteemed scholarly series; & an especially desirable Eshleman collectible with this (for him) lengthy & delightful inscription, signature, association & provenance. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing & a few tiny spots to front, back covers & spine; lightest wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; small area where sticker removal has left slight residue barely effecting first "M" of title on front cover; very small angled protrusion-streak along lower edge of text block (almost certainly a minor production flaw). Interior very fine with only small creases at upper corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3483]
