The Mediterranean Review Vol. I No. 2 (Winter 1971)

Orient, NY: The Mediterranean Review, 1971. First Printing. Softcover. Signed by Diane Wakoski. The second vintage number of the acclaimed literary & art journal "...devoted to new literature not only from the Mediterranean area but from the rest of the world" as stated by the publisher, chiefly edited by Robert DeMaria. Featuring an insightful, in-depth interview with primary Beat-&-Beyond author Paul Bowles conducted by Oliver Evans; a diaristic prose-poem essay by the iconic American playwright Tennessee Williams; fiction by Ann Birstein & others; poems by Bowles, Beat Generation- San Francisco Renaissance-founding giant of poetry & publishing Lawrence Ferlinghetti (about to turn 101 as of this writing!), Deep Image School pioneer Robert Kelly, Diane Wakoski & many others; & a partly color portfolio of artworks by the distinguished German-born artist Marc Heine. On the second page (73) of her poem "Thanking My Mother for Piano Lessons," Wakoski, the esteemed Beat-influenced American poet then-associated with Kelly's Deep Image School, has hand-written her signature with characteristic series of vertical doodles, below her printed name. With more illustrations & photographs; notes on contributors; & a delightful contemporary ad for Allen Ginsberg's books then (& still) available at Ferlinghetti's City Lights Books in San Francisco printed on inner rear cover. Large-format softcover complete with subscription card still attached between inner front cover & endpaper. A scarce & especially significant (to us Beat-&-Beyond Third Minders) issue in this venerable series; & a most desirable Wakoski collectible. In near-fine condition with moderate rubbing, browning, creasing & occasional spot-stains to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; one very short, closed tear at lower right corner-edge of spine; moderate rubbing & browning to edges of text block.
