Kayak 28

Santa Cruz, CA: Kayak Books Inc., 1972. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Diane Wakoski. This vintage number of the poetry journal edited by George Hitchcock features contributions by leading American poets of myriad schools & influences including Robert Bly; Raymond Carver, ultimately since known for his iconic short stories; Philip Levine; Ken Mikolowski, our good friend & mentor who resides here in Ann Arbor, founding publisher-editor of the legendary Alternative Press with his late wife Ann; Harold Norse, the great Beat-(especially William S. Burroughs) influenced writer who is among our favorites; Diane Wakoski, the acclaimed & prolific poet then-associated with the Deep Image School & others. At her contribution, the poem "Transformations- For All the Imaginary Men," below her printed name & beside title & first stanza, Wakoski has hand-written her signature with characteristic series of vertical doodles in blue ink (pg. 28). With many reproductions of antique engravings & illustrations on front cover & throughout; notes on contributors; reviews (including by Jascha Kessler of Vladimir Mayakovsky's now-classic "The Bedbug & Selected Poetry" collection); a few contemporary ads. A particularly rich, broadly varied issue in this venerable series; & a very desirable rarity in the earlier Wakoski canon. In fine condition with only very mild rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & stapled spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; one small, light silver-colored crayon (?) oval partly surrounding face of woman in engraved illustration on front cover; very light rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only small, faint bump-creases at corners of page leaves. Fine. [Item #3511]
