[Item #3515] Large Photograph-Poster. Joe Brainard.

Large Photograph-Poster

N/P: Unknown, N/D. Presumed First Printing. Single Sheet. A large (11' x 14") poster on thick paper stock with reproduction of photograph on recto, blank verso. The person depicted is certainly Joe Brainard (1942-1994), the New York School-&-Way-Beyond, really sui generis writer & artist whose fertile & prolific career was tragically shortened by AIDS at age 42. Among his many acclaimed works is the unclassifiable & profound "I Remember" (which was recently republished in a collection by the venerable Library of America) & his delightfully demented series of "Nancy"-related artwork-comics. This image of Brainard standing in front of an American flag is clearly early, circa mid-1960s when he would have been in his early twenties. There is no writing at all on either side of this item indicating the subject, photographer, date etc. The condition (below) of this production indicates that it was produced some time between the mid-1960s & the early 1970s at the latest. A unique & very rare (we've never encountered another) piece of ephemera for the Brainard devotee & collector. In good-to-near-fine condition with mild rubbing, browning to surfaces; moderate wear, warpage & some small-to-tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; two thin but somewhat large creases at/ near right edge very slightly effecting background of image; small areas of spotting & smudging at blank verso. Good- Near Fine. [Item #3515]
