Beat Scene No. 96 (Spring 2020)
Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2020. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. The latest (as of this writing) number of the indispensable magazine devoted to the Beat Generation, published by Kevin Ring in the UK. Featuring three fascinating articles that shed new light on heretofore-obscure aspects & episodes in the life of Jack Kerouac, Founding Father of the Beat Generation, including "Kerouac in Provincetown: How History Could Have Been Different/ Kerouac's and Otherwise" by Brian Hassett, focusing on Kerouac's brief but significant sojourn to that famous bohemian Massachusetts enclave during 1950. Also in this issue are a series of vintage-1970 letters between Arthur Knight (who with his wives Glee & later Kit published the legendary Unspeakable Visions of the Individual productions) & Kerouac's widow Stella Sampas Kerouac with commentary; two essays on cult favorite Charles Bukowski; two concerning William S. Burroughs including "Albatross" by Reality Studio's Jed Birmingham about a particularly rare "bird" in the WSB oeuvre; reprint of a lost contemporary review of an appearance by Allen Ginsberg during April 1973 with new introduction; a memorial tribute to John Giorno, the poet-artist-provocateur who was an associate of WSB & the keeper of The Bunker, who passed away in October 2019; a get-well tribute to Michael McClure with early photo (McClure died just as we received this issue) on inner front cover; & more. With extensive reviews, letters to the editor, many more photos & images etc. Blown-up reproduction of a heretofore unpublished image of Kerouac working in Provincetown (see above) on front cover. Another rich, essential issue in this series that never fails to live up to its front cover motto: "This is The Beat Generation"! In very fine, substantially as-new condition with only a few miniscule bumps at corners of covers. Very Fine. [Item #3542]
