Cullowhee, NC: R&R Publishing, 2010. First Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by David Waldrop & Michael Revere to Thomas Rain Crowe. A large oblong volume of personal history, poetry, photographs & miscellany by North Carolinians David ("Dave") Waldrop & Michael Revere (the latter also editor & publisher). In two parts, "Love, Family & Forgiveness" by Waldrop & "Soul Harvest" by Revere, the two authors delve deeply into their Appalachian roots; & the unique, venerable music & culture of this historic American region. This work is a corrective by these two insiders to the misunderstanding & stereotypes sometimes associated with Appalachia. Among the poems by Revere in his section is one that had earlier been published as a chapbook by his fellow North Carolina poet & publisher Thomas Rain Crowe's New Native Press ("What Co$t Freedom?," pgs. 194-99), & Crowe is quoted as a preamble to the poem. Crowe was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). On title page, Waldrop has hand-written & signed: "To Thomas/ and Nan-/ thank you for/ all of your/ Support/ (signed) Dave." Nan is Crowe's partner. Also on title page, Revere has hand-written & signed: "7-23-2010/ To Thomas/ My poet and spirit brother/ with love peace and respect!/ (signed) Michael revere (drawing-symbol)." Softcover original, first edition, first printing (not stated, but see dates above & below- quite possibly a prepublication copy). Also included loosely are three pieces of ephemera: (1) Flyer-announcement of reading/ book signing by Waldrop & Revere in celebration of the book's release at the iconic City Lights Bookshop in San Francisco on August 6th (2010), single letter-size sheet folded once widthwise with small piece of clear tape folded at top edge, minor creasing, folding at thin left edge & slight discoloration of light green background, printed on recto only. (2) Review of this book by Gary Carden in the Smoky Mountain News, single page leaf (pgs. 25-6) from unknown issue, folded once widthwise, jagged left edge from removal, minor creasing at/near edges & corners. (3) Postcard-format sheet with two of Revere's poems ("Happy Birthday Jesus" & "Red Horse: The Milky Way is at High Tide") from his section & this statement: "Due to a misprint in the book, these two poems were not showcased as intended. These two poems are very near and dear to my heart and I wanted to ensure they receive the attention they deserve. MR." On glossy thick paper stock in mint condition, placed between pages 130-131 (the latter page is where these two poems are indexed). A delightfully informative & eccentric production, with very significant, kindred association & provenance. In fine condition with mild rubbing & scratching to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; very slight outward warpage-curvature to right edge of front cover; occasional spotting to edges of text block, with small smudge-streak at lower edge. Interior very fine, virtually mint- note: there are two torn orange-colored stick note fragments affixed to three pages by proud & distinguished former owner Crowe: Page 129, with his name checked in pencil among list of "Special Thanks to Friends and Family"; page 194, with asterisk in pencil next to his quote preceding Revere's "What Co$t Freedom" poem. Condition details of ephemera noted above. Fine. [Item #3558]
