Sandburg: Photographers View Carl Sandburg
New York, NY: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. "Nearly sixty years ago, a struggling painter first met a young newspaperman when he came to court his sister. Each of the men went on to win international fame, the artist as one of the most brilliant photographers of our time, the journalist as a poet and writer who has carved an indelible niche in the world of letters. The painter was Edward Steichen; Carl Sandburg was the writer." (from front flap) A large volume with images of Carl Sandburg (1878-1967), the iconic American poet & biographer of Abraham Lincoln. Many of the photographs were taken by Edward Steichen (1879-1973), one of the world's most legendary photographers. The two great figures were brothers-in-law by virtue of Sanburg's marriage to Steichen's sister Lillian. Steichen edited & provided an introduction to this beautiful production. Among the other noted photographers who contributed images (which often show Sandburg & Steichen together) were Arnold Newman & Edward Weston. Some images show Sandburg in the company of such celebrities as Frank Lloyd Wright & even Marilyn Monroe. Hardcover in price-clipped original dust jacket, first edition as stated on copyright page.
