APO-33 Bulletin Number One: A Metabolic Regulator

n/p (distributed by City Lights Books, San Francisco, CA: Beach Books Texts & Documents, 1968. Third Edition. Stapled Wrappers. A Report on the Synthesis of the Apomorphine Formula. The third & final edition of this very rare item by William S. Burroughs, Founding Father of the Beat Generation & among the most influential literary & cultural figures of all time. Preceded by the virtually unobtainable 1965 first edition by Ed Sanders' Fuck You Press, which was rejected by WSB & consisted of no more than 10-20 copies (Maynard & Miles A12(a), pgs. 54-57). A photo-offset of an original WSB scrapbook-manuscript with columned cut-up text & images, 3000 copies were printed of the second & third editions during (circa) 1966, 1967 (reprint of second edition) & 1968 respectively, according to publisher's estimate (M&M A12(b), (c), pgs. 57-58). As noted in M&M A12(c), the third edition is distinguished by "(Copyright) by William S. Burroughs/ 1966, 1967, 1968/ Second Printing/ etc." on inner front cover-copyright page, as here. It is interesting to note that M&M refers to a price of $1.25 on front cover of this edition, but this copy shows a price of $1.50. It may therefore be a second printing of the third edition notwithstanding the "Second Printing" notice noted above in M&MA12(c), & therefore a later-alternate version of what is described therein. Confusing, we know, but we're committed to providing these Talmudic details for our collectors. See also Shoaf, Section I, No. 12(a), pg. 32; Schottlaender, A13(c), pg. 9. A production of Beach Books Texts & Documents, the imprint of Mary Beach & Claude Pelieu, who were Pamela Beach Plymell's mother & stepfather; & Charles Plymell's in-laws. All four of these well-known writers, artists & publishers were close friends & associates of WSB. In any case this is a very desirable & important WSB collectible. In exceptionally very fine condition relative to this notoriously fragile production, with only very slight rubbing & light, faint creasing to front, back covers & stapled spine; mildest wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; one tiny blue-green smudge-line at blank area near lower right side of back cover. Interior very fine with only decreasing light spot-stain at blank side edge of first four page leaves; small stain-discoloration at blank endpaper side edges (probably natural to grocery-bag quality paper); tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #3576]
