Spartanburg, SC: Holocene Press, 1993. First Edition Thus, Second Printing. Softcover. Inscribed & signed twice by John Lane to Thomas Rain Crowe. "These were my first essays, written after ten years of commitment to the life and language of a poet. They were written years ago now, in 1985, during a stay in a cabin in the Smokies, not far from the Cherokee Indian reservation. Keep in mind they are a poet's prose. They are the story of a time, of a feeling, a seasonal tone, a "weed time," the voice of a young man's soul at thirty." (from author's Preface, pg. 7) A collection of essays by John Lane, the acclaimed poet, environmentalist & educator. Early, poetic-prose impressions of rural South Carolina from the then-restless Lane who by age 31 had moved 33 times, as he notes in the first, title essay (pg. 11). Small-format softcover original, first edition thus, second printing of January 1995 as noted on copyright page. With cover design & photography by Mark Olencki which was not present on the first printing. On shorter title page, Lane has hand-written & signed: "For Brother Thomas-/ And on we go!/ Best,/ (signed) John/ 2/95/ Spartanburg."
