William Blake's Illustrations to The Grave

Seattle, WA: Double Elephant Folio & Quarto Co., Inc., 1969. First Edition Thus. Softcover. A very large (appx. 11&1/3" x 13&2/3") folio with very high-quality facsimile reproductions of engraved illustrations by the iconic British artist, poet & printer William Blake. As explained in colophon, "This book has been printed by photo-offset lithography from the original edition of 1804. It is number three in the Double Elephant- San Vito Press series. The illustrations which comprise this book were originally executed to illustrate "The Grave", a long poem by Robert Blair whose ideas appealed to Blake, even though the poetry is very poor. However, Blake's illustrations stand as a meaningful statement of his views on death & resurrection, as he intended them to. Thus we feel that we are being true to Blake's intentions by omitting Blair's poem, especially since Young's "Night Thoughts" (which Blake had illustrated years before) was seemingly more influential on the designs than Blair." A bold, magnificent production with the stunning reproductions printed on very thick stock "French-fold" double pages. Some of Blake's most unforgettable images are done great justice in this highly desirable rarity. In near-fine condition with moderate-to-significant rubbing to front, back covers & spine (only front cover is illustrated, & not too badly effected); mild wear & some small bumps, tiny chips to covers; much more to spine incl. closed tears with slight loss of paper; moderate rubbing & spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with all text & (most importantly) illustrations bright & unmarred; small bumps, creases to corners of page leaves; occasional sparse spotting at blank areas of some of same. Near Fine.
