Dublin, Ireland: Poetry Ireland/Eigse Eireann, 1999. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by co-editor Theo Dorgan to translator Thomas Rain Crowe. "Ten distinguished poets were invited...to choose 100 significant poems of the century. Each section editor reflects on the poems that mark, characterise or are emblematic of a particular decade. They have chosen for our attention poems that interrogate and are shaped by contending histories of the island of Ireland, poems that are also, perhaps more importantly, the irreducible work of individual, gifted and independent poets." (from front flap) an anthology of 100 Irish poems spanning 100 years (1900-1999), the entire 20th century, edited by Theo Dorgan & Noel Duffy. A distinguished group of Irish poets including Eavan Boland, Ciaran Carson, Seamus Heaney & John Montague has selected & introduced each decades' worth of poems. Among the poets represented, from the world-famous to locally revered, are Samuel Beckett, Boland, Carson, Heaney, Louis MacNeice, Montague, Bernard O'Donoghue, Greagoir O'Duill, W.B. Yeats & many more. If the poem was originally written in the native Irish language, it is presented in Irish & translated (sometimes by or with the author) into English on opposite pages. Among the translators is Thomas Rain Crowe, the acclaimed poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s (see our book, Starting from San Francisco, item No. 3071, Deluxe Edition No. 3075). Crowe co-translated Greagoir O'Duill's poem "Dubhghall" (pgs. 206, 207) with O'Duill. On the title page, co-editor Dorgan has hand-inscribed & signed: "For Thomas Rain Crowe,/ a true friend to/ Irish poetry,/ a gifted man./ Warm regards,/ (signed) Theo Dorgan."
